Hiking with the b'fit hiking group
We are sooo excited that Sheryl has created our new summer hiking program. It's a series of 6 hikes followed by the 7th hike to summit Torrey's and Gray's on August 22nd! First hike is on Sunday, June 13th - meet at become fit at 7:00.
Let's start talking about some of our favorite hiking experiences here. Also a great opportunity to ask Sheryl questions about the upcoming hikes.

Become Fit Fort Collins
That's me in the middle!! I know, I've changed my hair a little since then. On the left is Nana and on the right is Janet, and we are part of the way thru the John Muir section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Amazing country - we camped by beautiful lakes each night, shared the trail with mosquitoes (really big ones immune to DEET), had some bear scares, and really had a wonderful experience. Janet and Linda are right now on the PCT finishing a life long dream - to hike the entire trail from Mexico to Canada. I'm planning on joining them for my birthday in September as they near my home territory of Washington State.
I'm excited about our hike club and hope you will join us! Everyone is welcome - I designed the hikes to build a base level of hiking fitness and comfort with your gear before tackling some more difficult climbs. Nothing will be technical and it will be lots of fun!
Anyone have questions for me?

First Hike: This Sunday, June 13. Meet at 7:00 at become fit and carpool from there to Soapstone Prairie. If you haven't yet been to this fascinating site it's a must do!!
There is an extensive and diverse human history at Soapstone Prairie - exceeding 12,000 years - from Paleo-Indian of the Ice Age to millennia of American Indian groups, to more than a century of homesteaders and cattle and sheep ranchers. The most famous cultural site at Soapstone Prairie is the Lindenmayer archeological site, a National Historic Landmark. Excavations in the 1930s by the Smithsonian and Colorado Museum of Natural History conclusively dated human habitation in North America to at least 10,000 years ago and gave new insight into the Folsom culture. Needles, beads and stone tools were found, making the Lindenmeier site the most extensive Folsom culture campsite yet found. Other human history at Soapstone Prairie includes possible Clovis complex sites, numerous stone rings, sheep camp rock cairns, ruins of historic homesteads, ranches and their associated buildings, the foundation of a schoolhouse, and roads and trails. This will be our “shakedown” hike to check gear, shoes, backpacks etc. and will be a great chance to meet everyone!

I'd love to go and bring my daughter, but am wondering how long of a hike you're planning. She and I are a little wimpy. Thanks! Juley

Hi, Juley! Thanks for asking! You are both more than welcome this Sunday. This hike ill be like a walk down the paved trail here in Fort Collins. It's at Soapstone Prairie, which is worth checking out just as a drive! We'll talk about clothing and equipment and meet everyone, then take a short walk that should last about an hour.
My email is sheryltrent@earthlink.net, and if you want to send me your email I can get the exact hiking information out to you!

Make sure you sign up at the front desk - that way I can email you all the information you'll need for the hikes! My first email will be all about equipment and what you might want to pack for our hikes. Handy tips on how to pack light and what to avoid from my own experience...such as....beer is great in a water bottle, as long as you don't mind the fact that your water bottle will taste like beer no matter how many times you wash it!!!
Feel free to comment here with any questions, and family and friends are always welcome to hike with us!

Soapstone Prairie in the rain! Our group of hardy hikers had a great first hike. I think the hardest part was getting there in the rain and mud. We learned whether our gear was really waterproof, saw deer, antelope, lots of beautiful wildflowers, and even a view from the top of the ridge! Sign up at the front desk if you'd like to get our emails about upcoming hikes as well as some tips about hiking in Colorado....

Is it too late to sign up for the hike 6/20/10? Where will it be/gear, etc?
Thank you.

Sheryl, Thanks for putting together this fun hiking group. John, Kizzi, and I enjoyed Sunday's Arthur's Rock hike ... and really enjoyed our version of the hike at Soapstone without the rain!
Looking forward to the next one! Kris

Greyrock this Sunday - a BEAUTIFUL 7 miles with about 2,000 feet of elevation gain. We can meet to carpool at 7:00 am at become fit, or you can meet us at the trailhead (about 9 miles up Highway 14) around 7:30. Bring some extra water if you have a dog with you - not much water on this hike.
This is a great training hike for our fourteener summit attempt. Our goal is to keep a nice steady pace all the way to the top - bring some lunch for a picnic! PLAN ON 6 HOURS for the total hike - we can be back for more food at El Monte by 1:00 or so!
As always, everyone is welcome - friends, kids, dogs, partners, strangers....OK, maybe not total strangers but what better way to make friends than a 6 hour hike???
See you then, and send me your email if you would like more details or information. sheryltrent@earthlink.net
See you Sunday morning!
